📰 Need-to-Know

🏃 Mexico City Marathon is almost here

If you’re planning a late-summer trip to Mexico City, remember that the Mexico City Marathon takes place on August 30. Thousands of runners and spectators fill the streets, so expect road closures and heavy traffic around Reforma, Chapultepec, and the Historic Center. Even if you’re not running, it’s one of the city’s most energetic weekends.

🚗 Summer travel is in full swing

Mexico’s Héroes Paisanos program continues through early August, providing extra assistance to Mexican citizens returning from abroad. Travelers can expect additional government help desks at airports, border crossings, and bus terminals during the busy vacation season.

💡 Mexico Living Tip

Keep small cash—even in 2026

Mexico has embraced digital payments much more than it did a few years ago, but cash still rules in many everyday situations.

A few hundred pesos in small bills can save frustration when:

  • Parking attendants only accept cash.
  • Public restrooms require a few pesos.
  • Street markets and food vendors don’t take cards.
  • Small-town taxis prefer cash.
  • Your favorite taco stand’s internet goes down.

The trick isn’t carrying more cash—it’s carrying the right denominations.

🏝️ Hidden Gem

Tecolutla, Veracruz

Looking for a beach town that hasn’t become overdeveloped?

Tecolutla sits on Veracruz’s Gulf Coast and offers long sandy beaches, river boat tours through mangroves, excellent seafood, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from Cancún’s crowds.

It’s especially known for:

  • Fresh shrimp and seafood restaurants
  • Boat trips through mangrove estuaries
  • Beautiful sunsets over the river
  • Affordable beachfront hotels

If you’re planning a quieter Mexican beach escape, put Tecolutla on your list.

🍽️ Food of the Week

Tikin Xic

One of the Yucatán Peninsula’s signature dishes.

Fresh fish is marinated with achiote, sour orange, garlic, and spices before being wrapped in banana leaves and grilled.

The result is smoky, citrusy, and incredibly flavorful.

Best enjoyed with:

  • Pickled red onions
  • Rice
  • Fresh tortillas
  • An ice-cold agua fresca

🇲🇽 Spanish Word of the Week

Sobremesa

One of those wonderful Spanish words with no perfect English equivalent.

It means the time spent sitting around the table after a meal, talking with family and friends long after everyone has finished eating.

It’s less about the food and more about enjoying each other’s company—a tradition that captures one of the best parts of Mexican culture.

❤️ Quote of the Week

“Travel teaches you that there is more than one right way to live.”
