Summer travel is in full swing. Mexico is expecting more than 22 million hotel guests during the summer holiday period, making August one of the busiest travel months of the year. If you’re driving, expect heavier traffic around beaches, Pueblos Mágicos, and major cities. The Ángeles Verdes roadside assistance program has expanded coverage on hundreds of highway routes for the season.
Planning a weekend getaway? If you’ve been putting one off, now is a great time to book. Hotel occupancy is running higher than last year, especially in popular destinations, so reserving ahead can save both money and frustration.

Carry a small amount of cash—even if you almost never use it.
Mexico has become far more card-friendly over the last few years, but there are still moments when cash saves the day. Small taco stands, market vendors, parking attendants, public restrooms, and the occasional toll road may not accept cards.
A good rule of thumb is to keep 300–500 pesos tucked away in your wallet for those unexpected moments. Hopefully you’ll never need it—but when you do, you’ll be glad it’s there.

Huamantla, Tlaxcala
Most travelers pass right by Tlaxcala, but Huamantla is one of central Mexico’s most underrated Pueblos Mágicos.
August is its biggest month, when the streets are transformed with enormous carpets made from colored sawdust, flowers, and seeds. Walking through town feels like strolling through a temporary outdoor art museum.
The celebration culminates in the famous “Noche Que Nadie Duerme” (The Night Nobody Sleeps), when volunteers work through the night creating spectacular street art before the religious procession begins.
Even outside festival season, Huamantla offers beautiful colonial streets, local pulque, excellent food, and far fewer crowds than many better-known destinations.
🍴 Food of the Week
Chile en Nogada
August marks the beginning of chile en nogada season.
This iconic Mexican dish features a poblano pepper stuffed with picadillo, topped with a creamy walnut sauce, pomegranate seeds, and parsley—the colors of the Mexican flag.
Because fresh pomegranates and walnuts are seasonal, you’ll usually only find authentic chile en nogada from late summer into early fall. If you see it on a menu this month, don’t hesitate—it won’t be around for long.
